Union Home Minister Amit Shah Reviews Implementation of New Criminal Laws in New Delhi New Delhi, 5 May 2025: The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, today chaired a high-level review meeting in New Delhi with the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, and the Chief Minister, Smt Rekha Gupta, to assess the implementation of the three new criminal laws in the National Capital. The meeting comprehensively reviewed the progress of new provisions across the criminal justice system—including policing, prisons, judiciary, prosecution services, and forensic procedures. Senior officials in attendance included the Union Home Secretary, Chief Secretary of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, Commissioner of Delhi Police, Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), Director of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), as well as key officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Delhi Government. In his address, Shri Amit Shah stated that the three new criminal laws—introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi—aim to significantly enhance grassroots-level policing efficiency and accountability. He issued specific directives to ensure strict officer accountability during the implementation process. Shri Shah stressed the importance of monitoring compliance with the statutory timelines for filing charge-sheets—60 days and 90 days—highlighting the need for continuous oversight. He further directed that steps be taken to increase the conviction rate in heinous crime cases by a minimum of 20 per cent. He also underscored the need for technological integration, recommending that e-Summons be issued directly from the courts and simultaneously forwarded to local police stations. Additionally, the Home Minister called for the acceleration of appointments in the Directorate of Prosecution and emphasised that decisions regarding appeals must be taken independently by the Directorate itself. The meeting reflected the government’s firm commitment to modernising India's criminal justice system and ensuring swift, transparent, and effective implementation of the reformed legal framework. |
