Secretary General of Muslim World League Calls on Prime Minister Modi in Jeddah

Jeddah, 23 April 2025 — The Secretary General of the Muslim World League, Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, called on Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in Jeddah today during the Prime Minister's visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The meeting was marked by a strong condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, and a shared emphasis on promoting interfaith harmony and global peace.

Sheikh Al-Issa conveyed his heartfelt condolences over the loss of innocent lives in the ghastly attack in Pahalgam, offering prayers and solidarity with the people of India during this difficult time. He reiterated the Muslim World League’s resolute opposition to extremism, violence, and terrorism in all its forms.

Prime Minister Modi recalled his earlier meeting with the Secretary General in New Delhi in July 2023, and expressed appreciation for the League’s global efforts in advancing moderation, tolerance, and social cohesion. He welcomed the Secretary General’s proposal to organise a “Summit of Diversity and Harmony” in India, and acknowledged the significance of such initiatives in fostering mutual understanding.

Reflecting on India’s civilisational values, the Prime Minister invoked the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — “the world is one family” — and noted that India, as a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious society, draws strength from its unparalleled diversity. He underscored that this pluralism has long shaped the country’s inclusive and democratic ethos.

Prime Minister Modi also highlighted the strong and growing partnership between India and Saudi Arabia, describing it as an enduring relationship spanning strategic, economic, and cultural spheres. The deep-rooted people-to-people ties and shared values, he said, remain at the heart of this vital engagement.

In a statement following the meeting, Sheikh Al-Issa said: "Today, I met with His Excellency the Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi, in Jeddah. During our meeting, we discussed issues of common interest and the idea of organising a 'Summit of Diversity and Harmony' in India."

The meeting reaffirmed both sides’ commitment to promoting peace, dialogue, and cooperation across cultures and faiths in a world increasingly marked by polarisation and division.
